We are so happy to introduce our friend Charlie Waymire as he offers tips and techniques for drum micing. Designed with both live and studio use in mind, Charlie brings a fresh and innovative approach to this tutorial.
You’ll be able to hear through muting and channel “on/off” simulation the incredible rear rejection and sound that makes Heil Sound mics so popular for drum use. We hope you enjoy it!

I,ve just bought a pr20 and it sounds great on my snare. For now i will record with it and later take it to live situations. I,m impressed and hope to add other heil mics to my ‘arsenal’.
Awesome short video for mic’ing drums. Thanks!!
I’ve enjoyed using my PR48 kick mic for several years. The instruction at 3 minutes to not put the mic directly in the hole having just suggested that very thing is very confusing. Bad form. The physical design of the mic makes it virtually impossible to use it any other way, other than not on the hole at all. I’ve often wished it was designed differently so that it would be easier to use in other ways. Please explain.
Tim thank you for your comments. You can use the mics in the hole near the front of the kick, you just have to listen to see what sounds best for you. The high sound pressure levels these mics can take allow you to basically put the mic wherever you want. Our fantastic videographer is more of a studio engineer and didn’t realize that many live sound engineers put the mic directly in the hole right at the front of the kick drum. Live engineering as you know is sometimes a compromise between the best sound and isolation. These videos have a lot of moving parts and sometimes we miss something that can use clarification. Thanks for bringing this to our attention and thank you for watching our instructional video.
Very informative. It is going to help me re-arrange the mics on the drum set at my church, for better response.
Great and very helpful video!
Amazing tutorial” thanks guy’s , I will share this with my musican and sound tech buds.
Yeah, this vid is excellent. Thanks guy’s.
I have used Heil microphones, exclusively, for drums both live in the studio for years. They are truly amazing products capable of accurately capturing a lot styles and tunings.
This video, however, is focused on achieving one sort of drum sound.
