The Tom Joyner Morning Show, now broadcasting from the recently constructed Reach Media studios, has received a new Heil Sound PR 40 microphone, custom painted in a red pearl finish for Mr. Joyner’s use. The studio and Tom Joyner are no strangers to Heil Sound products, and currently own (15) PR 40’s, (16) PR 20’s and (2) PR 30’s, as well as PL-2T booms and PRSM shock mounts. Kent Kramer, Reach Media’s director of engineering said, “I chose the Heil microphones after years of using the “industry standards, and I think they are great. The PR 40 has a very clean and natural sound. I’ve done side by side comparison with other mics and feel that it’s a great microphone, and better than other broadcast studio mics.”
The microphones are used liberally throughout the state-of-the-art facility, which consists of a performance area, production room and the center-piece; Tom Joyner’s custom built desk. Sitting on a slightly raised platform, he has clear sight of the entire room, and the producers and call screeners can see him over guests and other cast members seated around the desk. “When you walk into the Tom Joyner studios, they are unlike any radio studio you’ve ever seen,” says Kramer. “It’s very obvious where Tom sits. He’s in the center. The red PR 40 draws your attention right away. I’ve never customized a piece of hardware quite like that; it clearly say’s ‘I am Tom Joyner’s microphone.’ Guests are always in awe of the studio, having a custom mic just for Tom just adds to the mystique of the studio.”
